Well, it’s finally here; the time to talk about GT-38. Folks have been getting excited since the announcement in Dayton. We are indeed heading to Asheville, North Carolina. Asheville is a vibrant city with activities galore from art, shops, restaurants, hand-craft breweries, great roads for driving, and an atmosphere of welcome for everyone. Come and enjoy the crisp mountain air!

The GT-38 committee is offering quite an assortment of regalia for purchase. You’ll find t-shirts in choice of white or hunter green; polo shirts in choice of white or light blue; short-sleeved oxford shirts in light blue; all of these are available in men’s and ladies’ sizes from small to 3X. There are also caps, visors, and pins. Everything will have the GT-38 logo on it. All prices and items are listed on the registration form and photos of the shirts can be seen on the GT-38 website. That is an important address for all to remember as that is where you’ll find up to the minute information about activities and events too numerous to list on the registration form. So even after you’ve sent in your registration be sure to return to the website to put your name in for other activities that you can choose to do during your time in Asheville.

On Monday evening, there will be an Orientation BBQ with accompanying Blue Grass Music to get us all in that North Carolina mood. Preceding the BBQ will be a First Timer’s Car Display on the grounds for all to enjoy.

BiltmoreTuesday brings us to one of the most exciting events of GT-38, the Biltmore Experience! What is the Biltmore Experience, you ask? It is a day at the Biltmore Estate which starts early in the morning before the estate is open to the public. We will be driving in and setting up our cars along the driveways in front of the 255-room mansion where a professional photographer will take a panoramic photo of all of our cars! Attendees will have the option of selecting the package with either: the small panoramic photo (5” x 15”), breakfast, self-guided tours of house, gardens, and village at the cost of $88 or the larger photo (10” x 32”), breakfast, self-guided tours of house, gardens, and village at the cost of $120. In order to get your car in the photo, the driver must pick one of the two packages. Other family members accompanying the driver can purchase the Biltmore experience for $75 each. If you do not want your car in the photo, then you can get the same package at the additional person rate. Yes, it is a bit costly but it really is a greatly reduced price for the package and it is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. So start saving now so that you can get in on the fun while in Asheville! Go to the GT-38 website for more information on this.

Crown PlazaOur host hotel is the Crowne Plaza Tennis and Golf Resort, One Resort Drive, Asheville, NC. The hotel has many amenities including a full spa, indoor tennis courts, saltwater indoor pool, and a zip-line to mention a few. Visit the hotel’s website for much more information. Our rate will be honored three days prior to and following the GT-38 dates of June 10-14, 2013. Rooms have been being booked at a brisk speed; so if you’ve been thinking of attending, make your room reservations as soon as possible. You can make room reservations 24/7 at either by calling 1-888-233-9527 or visiting the hotel's NAMGAR specific online reservation system ; our nightly NAMGAR rate is $113 for a room with 2 double beds, $159 for a one bedroom villa and $189 for a two-bedroom villa. Villas can be only reserved by calling 1-800-733-3211 during normal business hours. The villas are a short distance away from the main hotel and provide a bit more privacy for families and groups. At this time all of the rooms with king beds in our block have been reserved; the hotel has a limited number and you may request that you would like a king if any become available. PLEASE NOTE: Hotel reservations at the above rates with expire on May 11, 2013. After that date, reservations will be accepted on a space available basis at the prevailing rate, which may be higher.

Blue Ridge ParkwayThe GT committee has some great “On Your Own Drives” that include driving some portions of the Blue Ridge Parkway (America’s Favorite Drive.) There are four entry points in the Asheville area so that whether you head north or south you’ll find yourself taking in some breathtaking scenery as you enjoy the winding curves of the road! That, to me, sounds like prime MG fun! One of the drives includes the famous "Diamondback sports car route" with 190 curves in the 12 mile climb to the Parkway. (Trucks are prohibited.)

Another activity to note is that the usual Magnette Enthusiasts Breakfast has been changed to a Luncheon in honor of the 60th Anniversary of the presentation of the MG Magnette at the London Car Show. It will be held from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, immediately following the Car Show. The Car Show will be held on the hotel’s grounds, so you won’t have far to go. Also, following the Car Show on Wednesday afternoon will be the Funkhana. I’m told it is going to have a “Mountain Passtimes” theme.

Thursday morning you’ll be able to join in the Rallye for a fun drive, which I’m guessing might have you facing some real challenges along with spectacular views and interesting sites in and around Asheville. It will be a short hour and half Rallye, but I guess that will depend on how lost you get. The route will be well worth driving even if you don't compete. There will be plenty of time for other drives and tours after the Rallye. Thursday afternoon will be the annual Chapter Contacts Meeting from 2:30 to 4 p.m. So, if you’re representing your Chapter, plan on attending as it’s a chance to hear what Chapters are doing all over North America.

Thursday evening, as usual, will be our Awards Banquet; always a wonderful ending to a GT, plus a chance to hear the announcement for the upcoming GT and Regionals. You will have a choice of three plated entrees: Carribbean Pork Tenderloin (sweet and spicy rubbed pork tenderloin with sweet mango glaze); Chicken Marsala (chicken breast sautéed with wild mushrooms and drizzled with Marsala Sauce); or Vegetable Spinach Ravioli (served with Alfredo cream). All come with chef’s choice of vegetable and starch along with a mixed greens salad with cherry tomatoes and shredded carrots, assorted dressings, and a piece of Granny Smith Apple pie with caramel sauce for dessert, coffee, decaffeinated coffee, and teas. Yum, I’m getting hungry just thinking of it!

Friday morning will be our time to say “goodbyes” along with some refreshments to get us on the road home. For a better tentative schedule and to find the latest information on all things concerning GT-38, visit the GT38 website (www.gt38-namgar.org).
